On today's episode of the "Let People Prosper" show, which was recorded on Feb. 24, 2023, I'm honored to be joined by Dr. Tyler Goodspeed, who is an economist, fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and was acting chairman of the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers from 2020 - 2021.

We discuss:
  • His fascinating experience working inside the White House in numerous roles from 2017 to 2021;
  • What decisions led to present-day inflationary pressures, and why we need market growth; and
  • Why America is at high risk for a recession as well as reasons to be optimistic for future improvement and much more.

Dr. Goodspeed’s bio and other info (here):
  • Tyler Goodspeed is a Kleinheinz Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. From 2020 to 2021 he served as acting chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, having been appointed by the president as a member of the council in 2019. In that role, he advised the administration’s economic response to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as subsequent economic recovery packages. He previously served as chief economist for macroeconomic policy and senior economist for tax, public finance, and macroeconomics, playing an instrumental role in designing the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
  • Before joining the council, Dr. Goodspeed was on the faculty of Economics at the University of Oxford and was a lecturer in economics at King’s College London. He has published extensively on financial regulation, banking, and monetary economics, with particular attention to the role of access to credit in mitigating the effects of adverse environmental shocks in historical contexts. His research has appeared in three full-length monographs from academic presses, as well as numerous articles in peer-reviewed and edited journals.
  • Goodspeed has a PhD in history from Harvard University and a PhD in economics from the University of Cambridge. He also received a BA in economics and history from Harvard, an MA in history from Harvard, and an MPhil in economic history from Cambridge, where he was a Gates Scholar. He is currently a member of the American Economic Association and the Economic History Association and an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute, and was previously a member of the Economic History Society and the Royal Economic Society.

  • Born and raised in Saint-Lambert on the south shore of Montreal in Canada, I completed my Ph.D in economic history at the London School of Economics (LSE) in June 2016. My research centers on the historical measurement of living standards and inequality, public economics, population economics and political economy (in no particular order of preference). My dissertation was a finalist by the EHA for the Allan Nevins Award given to the best dissertation in North American economic history.
    I also have a master’s degree from the LSE. I received my undergraduate degree from Montreal University in economics and politics.
  • I am currently assistant professor of economics at George Mason University. Previously, I was assistant professor of economics at King’s University College and visiting assistant professor of economics at Bates College (Lewiston, ME). I also used to be postdoctoral fellow at Texas Tech University as part of its Free Market Institute. Moreover, I used to be a course lecturer at HEC Montréal where I taught microeconomics, macroeconomics and economic history at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • I have more than 60 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals. I have also published a book on Canadian economic history, in French, which has since been translated into English and published by Palgrave McMillan.

​Dr. Arthur Laffer’s bio and other info (here):
  • Arthur B. Laffer is the founder and chairman of Laffer Associates, an economic research and consulting firm. As a result of Dr. Laffer’s economic insight and influence in starting a worldwide tax cutting movement during the 1980s, many publications have named him “The Father of Supply Side Economics.”
  • He is a founding member of the Congressional Policy Advisory Board, which assisted in forming legislation for the 105th, 106th and 107th Congress. Dr. Laffer served as a member of President Reagan’s Economic Policy Advisory Board for both of his two terms.
  • In March 1999, he was noted by Time Magazine as one of “the Century’s Greatest Minds” for his invention of the Laffer curve, which has been called one of “a few of the advances that powered this extraordinary century.”
  • He has received many awards for his economic research including two Graham and Dodd Awards from the Financial Analyst Federation. He graduated from Yale with a Bachelor’s degree in economics in 1963 and received both his MBA and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.

  • Randan Steinhauser is the Founding Partner of Steinhauser Strategies, which she launched in 2013 after relocating to Austin from Washington, D.C. Randan specializes in issue advocacy, non-profit, and corporate communications.
  • Randan’s career began in the Governor’s Office in South Carolina. In 2009 she joined the staff for U.S. Senator Jim DeMint in Washington, D.C. and later transitioned into the non-profit world working in foreign policy and education reform for former U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
  • She has worked in more than 30 states on issue advocacy and political campaigns. Randan assists clients with media relations, coalition development, strategic communications, and government affairs.
  • Originally from South Carolina, Randan is a graduate of The University of South Carolina.   • Congressman Chip Roy is a devoted husband and father of two currently serving his third  term in Congress representing Texas's 21st Congressional District — which includes South Austin, North San Antonio, and the Texas Hill Country.
  • Previously, Rep. Roy served as First Assistant Attorney General of Texas under Ken Paxton, Chief of Staff to Sen. Ted Cruz, senior advisor to Texas Governor Rick Perry, Senate Judiciary Committee staff director under Sen. John Cornyn, and as a federal prosecutor.
  • Prior to the public sector, he worked for nearly three years as an investment banking analyst. 
    Rep. Roy holds a B.A. and M.A from the University of Virginia and a J.D. from the University of Texas.  He serves on the House Judiciary, Rules, and Budget Committees and is the Policy Chair of the House Freedom Caucus.

​Dr. Vance Ginn’s bio (here):
  • Vance Ginn, Ph.D., is an accomplished economist finding free-market solutions that let people prosper. He is founder and president of Ginn Economic Consulting where he provides high-quality research and trusted insights on how to affect change at the federal, state, and local levels. Ginn’s experience includes time in public policy, government, and academia. He is chief economist at Pelican Institute for Public Policy and senior fellow at several national and state-based think tanks, including Young Americans for Liberty and Americans for Tax Reform. 
  • He previously served as the associate director for economic policy ("chief economist") of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, June 2019 to May 2020. While there he advised the OMB’s senior staff on economic and fiscal policy matters, resulting in $4.6 trillion in savings over a decade and the need for a fiscal rule in the President's FY 2021 Budget. He is the former chief economist at Texas Public Policy Foundation and policy director for TPPF’s Alliance for Opportunity campaign, a multi-state poverty relief initiative, where he collectively fought and won many free-market reforms to let people prosper during multiple legislative sessions. He has taught many economic courses at institutions of higher education, including Sam Houston State University and Texas Tech University, where he won a teaching award. 
  • Ginn has appeared on leading national and state news shows, such as “America Reports” on Fox News and “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” on Fox Business. His commentaries have been published in The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, Washington Post, National Review, Washington Examiner, American Institute for Economic Research, Econlib, and other national and state publications. He earned his doctorate in economics at Texas Tech University. Ginn graduated from home school in South Houston, Texas, resides in Round Rock, Texas with his wife and three kids, and is a drummer who played for a top rock band in Houston, Texas.
